Finding The Right Engagement Ring
Seems like the world is full of jeweler’s shops as well as online shops all selling beautiful engagement rings in all shapes and sizes, in white gold, yellow gold, vintage and of course for all prices. Most people choose a diamond engagement ring but there are other choices.
Nowadays when many couples are already living together before they get engaged, it often happens that the girl tries to discreetly tell her partner what sort of ring she would like. It’s as easy today as sending him a photo on his phone of the ring or style of ring that makes your heart sing.
Did you know that as far back as Ancient Egypt they had an engagement band whereas the Romans thought that the ring symbolized ownership! Also in Roman times the bride had two rings, a golden one which she wore when she went out in public and another ring made of iron which she wore at home where she did chores. Probably this was similar to what we now have – usually a simpler golden band for a wedding ring which we always wear, with the more elaborate engagement ring being worn when we go out. The very first diamond engagement ring was made for the bride of Archduke Maximilian of Austria in 1477 and diamond rings were associated with people of a ‘higher class’ for a long time.
There are different styles of engagement rings, of course. The solitaire has one single diamond and this could come in a variety of shapes and sizes as well as different cuts of the stone. The most popular shape which accounts for three quarters of diamonds today is a round brilliant diamond with a 58 facet cut enabling it to sparkle in all directions. An oval diamond gives the illusion of length to a hand. There are also pear shaped diamonds that can look like a sparkling teardrop. The emerald cut diamond is a rectangle with cut corners. These stones are usually of superior color and clarity. The heart shaped diamond of course if a favorite and is basically a pear shaped diamond which has a cleft in the round part. The princess cut of course also has a lot of admirers. This is a square or rectangular cut but has lots of sparkling facets.
Of course you can choose all sorts of different styles – a large stone surrounded by diamonds, a stone with smaller stones on each side, etc. You also do not have to stick with gold – whatever color. Nowadays you can also choose platinum (even more expensive than gold), titanium or even stainless steel. Everything is possible.
Also although today a diamond engagement ring is very traditional, you can also choose other gemstones instead. For example you can get a white sapphire which, although not as brilliant as a diamond, is still a lovely stone. It has a hint of blue and is much cheaper than a diamond so you could get a larger stone. If you want to be original, how about a dark blue sapphire engagement ring with a small diamond on each side?
You can choose from so many different styles, stones and cuts of stones, there is an engagement ring to bring joy to everyone who wants one.
